Breath / Oddech
During the prolonged period of the pandemic and epidemic threat, I began to wonder about the key role of Breath as manifestation of life, but also an acoustic phenomenon. It can be silent, but also distinctive, loud and clearly audible. An American composer, Pauline Oliveros, in her methodology of sound education and in-depth listening (Deep Listening), offers exercises in working with breath and the sound sphere of breathing. Breath can be rhythmic, controlled, or semi-vocal. For most of our life, it remains unconscious. Often when recording sounds in the field with the help of very sensitive microphones, in very quiet locations my presence in the recording was revealed through my breath, which was barely audible on site. Now I wanted to consciously use this phenomenon to create sound work. I recorded my own breath. I also received some interesting breath sound recordings from others.
